Gum grafting can be recommended for many different reasons: exposed tooth root or implant – recession, trauma, aging, tooth sensitivity, correcting high frenum attachments and traumatic brushing. There are different types of grafting treatment options which involve removing gum tissue from the roof of your mouth or palate. The removal of the palate tissue can cause additional pain, cause discomfort and require two surgical sites.

Palate free procedures use advancements in biomaterials, are less invasive than traditional treatments and provide patients with options to fit their lifestyle. Based on your personal preference (religion, diet), we have multiple solutions available of different origins: human or animal (cow, pig or fish).

Bone Regeneration procedures aim to restore damaged or missing bone tissue through various techniques. Typically, these procedures involve the use of biomaterials, growth factors, or stem cells to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. One common approach in bone grafting, where bone tissue is transplanted from one area of the body to another or from a donor source. Another method involves the use of scaffolds, which provide a framework for new bone growth. Additionally, growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) can be applied to promote bone formation. Stem cell therapies may also be used, where stem cells are harvested from the patient’s own body or from a donor and then implanted into the site of bone damage to aid in regeneration. These procedures are often used to treat fractures, bone defects or conditions such as osteoporosis.

Air-flow therapy is a dental procedure used for professional dental cleaning and plaque removal. It involves a device that emits a controlled stream of air, water, and fine powder particles (typically sodium bicarbonate or glycine) to gently remove plaque, tarter, and stains from the teeth and gum line. The high-pressure air-water-powder mixture effectively cleans hard-to-reach areas and can be adjusted based on the patient’s comfort level and the severity of the buildup. Air-flow therapy is often preferred by patients due to its effectiveness and minimal discomfort compared to traditional scaling and polishing methods. Additionally, it can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive teeth or those prone to gum inflammation.

Periodontists specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, which affects the structures supporting teeth and implants, including the gums and bone. There are many techniques to save teeth and implants when periodontal disease is present. Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure involving deep cleaning of the teeth or implants to remove plaque and calculus (tarter) buildup from below the gum line. In cases where periodontal disease has advanced and caused significant damage to the gums and bone, surgical intervention may be necessary. Periodontal surgeries such as flap surgery, bone grafting, and guided tissue regeneration aim to repair and regenerate damaged tissues around the teeth.

Still have questions?
What is a gum or soft tissue graft?
A gum or soft tissue graft is a periodontal procedure that is used to correct gum recession, or to cover an exposed tooth root or implant.
Are there different types of gum or soft tissue grafts?
Yes there are a few different procedures that are commonly used. The Perio Studio uses a palate free approach when appropriate, however, some of the more traditional grafts below are also used.
- Pedicle Graft – Using the nearby tissue to the recession area and positioning to correct the gum defect.
- Free Gingival Graft – A strip of tissue is removed from the roof of the mouth and stitched to the grafting site. This is used most commonly to thicken existing tissue.
- Connective Tissue Graft – For single or larger areas or root exposure, subepithelial tissue is removed from a small flap in the roof of the mouth and stitched to the grafting site. This is most common for tooth root exposure or the gum defect around a dental implant.
Why do I need a gum or soft tissue graft?
Gum grafting can be recommended for many different reasons: gum disease, exposed tooth root or implant – recession, trauma, aging, tooth sensitivity, correcting high frenum attachments and over brushing.
What are the benefits of a gum or soft tissue graft?
- Help decrease sensitivity from exposed tooth roots
- Improve esthetics of the gum, exposed during rest or when smiling.
- Prevent additional dental concerns such as bone loss, inflammation or other complications.
- Support the health of a dental implant that presents with a thin gum.
“Still Life with Imaginary Objects by Bogdan Matei” Art on Display at The Perio Studio
The so-called “still life” has been the focus of my work for many decades. In the beginning I was fascinated by the materiality of inanimate objects as subject matter and I embarked into a contest with the grand masters I admired and emulated.
What an artistic epiphany it was for me when my paintbrush refused to replicate the well-known and gave new life to the world around. My journey was transformed into a carnival of the imaginary. I became Pygmalion, creating vibrant life in unmovable things. This Imaginary objects collection captures for me the ambivalence of life, of soul and matter, as the shapes depicted move aimlessly in time and space. They are always in flow, guided by the eternal optimism for the future and whispering tales of multifaceted and metamorphic lives, liberated towards the never-ending quest for aesthetic immortality.
